Director, Category Management

The Category Director is responsible for developing the strategic direction for categories, driving business performance and aligning with channel leaders, marketing, pricing, manufacturing and engineering to optimize total business performance. In addition, this position will be responsible for owning and managing category P&L, developing category strategy and brand positioning as well as developing cross-functional teams.  This role will be located at the company’s corporate headquarters in southern Los Angeles


  • Establish strategic vision for product categories including: Brand portfolio & channel strategy, long-range plans and resource alignment
  • Manage internal brands from inception to product development plan process and launch to meet customer strategies
  • Own strategy & positioning for owned brands to deliver brand growth and margin contribution
  • Cross functional category performance and results including P&L, turn and out-of-stock responsibility, with a focus on operational excellence and continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with wholesale and retail channels to develop a platform based, solutions-oriented product strategy, conduct category research, develop and execute highly integrated new product launch and go-to-market plans
  • Manage analytical tools such as voice consumer insights, industry trends, competitive landscape & benchmarking
  • Actively manage product lifecycles from long-range product plans, to development, launch and exit
  • Engage and drive alignment with channel leaders on pricing, promotions and channel strategy in order to optimize both top and bottom-line results
  • Partner with marketing to develop strong, differentiated brand strategies and positioning
  • Build and maintain an industry-leading portfolio of third-party brands to ensure customers have access to all brands
  • Develop top talent including hiring, onboarding and individual development and recognition
  • Contribute to the Long-Range-Product Plan (LRPP)
  • Lead Category Managers and Product Leaders in developing and driving innovated solutions and implementations
  • Coach and support team in prioritizing projects and developing fact-based recommendations


Background Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or comparable work experience preferred
  • 12+ years of experience, including category management, marketing and/or product development experience with at least 5 years managing people / leading teams
  • Prior experience managing a P&L, preferable in an omni-channel retail environment
  • Outstanding leadership skills within team and cross-functionally in a matrix environment; ability to make decisions quickly and influence senior leaders
  • Strong project management and analytical skills. Knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative market research tools
  • Product development or product management experience strongly preferred.  Ability to lead long-term product portfolio strategy as well as launch products on-time and under budget in collaboration with engineering teams 
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with emphasis on collaboration and gaining commitment
  • Proven ability to build and develop a strong team that delivers results
