Controller
SkyWater Search Partners is excited to be partnering with our client on a fully retained search for their next Controller. Reporting directly to the CFO, this role leads the Accounting and Treasury Management functions, with ownership of financial statement preparation, internal controls, and financial compliance. We’re seeking a strong people leader with a process improvement mindset and a strategic approach to financial operations.
The ideal candidate will be a CPA with a foundation in public accounting with industry experience.
Only local candidates based in Minnesota will be considered.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the accounting team by actively engaging, removing obstacles, and promoting a high-performance culture.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial and tax accounting in compliance with GAAP and IRS regulations, including filing and payment of tax liabilities.
- Set annual financial goals aligned with the company’s strategic growth plans.
- Assume fiduciary responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of financial statements.
- Provide forward-thinking financial leadership.
- Partner with executive leadership to evolve departmental goals and strategies.
- General Ledger / Cash Management o Review and record bank transactions daily. o Prepare monthly and annual financial statements. o Lead the annual financial statement audit. o Oversee month-end close processes, reconciliations, and intercompany reporting. o Ensure timely completion of quarterly filings, including MN Sales & Use Tax, Department of Commerce Reports, and Tax Liability Reports. o Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, and tax functions.
- Identify staffing and training needs, evaluate performance, and mentor accounting staff.
- Serve as the primary contact for external audits and manage audit preparation and support.
- Foster innovation and adaptability while maintaining a broad organizational perspective.
- Stay current on audit best practices and regulatory updates across federal, state, and local levels.
- Continuously improve processes, internal controls, and systems to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain and evolve effective internal controls and ensure compliance with applicable laws and GAAP standards.
- Refine policies and procedures for maximum effectiveness.
- Oversee financial systems management to ensure alignment with strategic objectives; experience with Workday Financials strongly preferred.
- Manage the annual 1099 reporting process.
Desired Skills and Experience
- 10+ years of accounting and/or controllership experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA required (active or inactive).
- Proven track record as a people leader, team builder, and problem-solver.

- Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated experience in team development and talent management.
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Strong sense of urgency and commitment to process improvement.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; relationship building is key.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP and a solid understanding of tax practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and financial software; Workday Financials experience is strongly preferred.
- Excellent organizational and leadership capabilities.
