We have been retained by an established Twin Cities based Professional Services firm to help them identify their next Director of Finance. This role will have a seat at the table and will serve as a strategic business partner to the firm’s Owners. This individual will oversee all aspects of financial management, operations, and long-term strategy. The Director of Finance will play a highly visible and influential role within the firm, collaborating closely with partners and the leadership team to drive financial performance, guide strategic decision-making, and support continued growth. In addition to leading the accounting and finance functions, this role will also provide oversight of IT and records management, ensuring that the firm’s infrastructure and systems align with its strategic and operational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all accounting and finance operations, including billing, collections, accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Manage budgeting and forecasting processes; monitor variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Oversee cash flow management, banking relationships, and distributions.
  • Partner with senior leadership on strategic financial initiatives and decision support.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, internal controls, and risk management practices.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and operational process improvement.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff.
  • Support profitability analysis, pricing, and business development initiatives.
  • Coordinate external tax filings and manage relationships with auditors and outside advisors.
  • Serve on internal committees related to information security and assist with external IT assessments and audits.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and finance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in a professional services or multi-entity business environment preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with ERP or financial management systems (Aderant or similar software a plus).
  • Advanced Excel skills and expertise in financial modeling.
  • Proven leadership, team management, and staff development capabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, strategic thinking, and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Natural curiosity and a track record of streamlining and automating manual processes.
