Our client is a well-established, employee-owned commercial contractor (~$132M revenue) specializing in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and low-voltage/technology services. The company has been in business for over 100 years and has experienced steady growth year over year!

The Controller will oversee the full accounting function and lead a team. This is a highly visible role with direct exposure to executive leadership.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable in a dynamic, evolving environment and excited about helping build and standardize processes as the company continues to grow.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee full accounting operations (AP, AR, payroll, GL, union reporting, compliance)
  • Manage project-based accounting (WIP, % of completion, project margin tracking)
  • Lead financial reporting, cash flow management, and budgeting/forecasting
  • Partner with leadership to support strategic decision-making
  • Manage and mentor a tenured accounting team (~10 direct reports)
  • Drive process improvements and help standardize workflows
  • Play a key role in optimizing recently implemented systems
  • Support ongoing system enhancements and future implementations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations and external stakeholders

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA or CPA-eligible preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership exposure
  • Experience in construction, project-based, or service-based environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of WIP and percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Experience managing or mentoring accounting teams
  • Proficiency with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems preferred
  • Systems-savvy with experience improving processes and workflows
  • Comfortable operating in a less structured, evolving environment
  • Strong communication skills with ability to partner cross-functionally
  • Experience with union payroll or multi-state payroll a plus
