We’re excited to partner with a highly respected, growth-oriented manufacturing organization in the Twin Cities that is expanding its Continuous Improvement & Automation Engineering team. This organization has made significant investments in automation, tooling, and advanced manufacturing processes and is seeing measurable gains in cost reduction and operational efficiency.

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer – Manufacturing to design fixtures, tooling, and semi-automated equipment that directly improve throughput, ergonomics, and machine autonomy. This role blends hands-on shop floor engagement with creative mechanical design, offering high ownership of projects that move from concept through implementation.

 

Responsibilities

  • Design production fixtures, tooling, and custom manufacturing equipment using SolidWorks
  • Develop and implement semi-automated and automated machines to support production and testing
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings (BOMs, tolerances, basic GD&T)
  • Own automation and tooling projects from concept through launch, managing multiple initiatives concurrently
  • Partner with manufacturing, quality, and operations teams to improve process flow, labor efficiency, and repeatability
  • Troubleshoot equipment and fixture performance issues and implement design improvements
  • Support fabrication, machining, and assembly of designed equipment on the shop floor
  • Work directly with vendors and integrators to source components, controls hardware, and automation solutions
  • Contribute manufacturability input and custom tooling solutions for new product introductions

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Automation, or related engineering field
  • 3–7 years of mechanical or manufacturing engineering experience
  • Strong SolidWorks proficiency (parts, assemblies, drawings)
  • Hands-on exposure to machining, fabrication, or production environments
  • Experience or working knowledge of automation, PLCs, or robotics (Fanuc exposure a plus)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with operators, engineers, vendors, and leadership
