Mechanical Engineer III

  • Job Tag: #LI-ZH1
  • Posted: August 17,2026

A growing custom industrial equipment manufacturer in the east St. Paul area is seeking a Design Engineer III to add senior-level technical depth to its mechanical engineering team.

This role is centered on the design and development of customized industrial machinery from initial customer requirements through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and final installation. The successful candidate will lead 3-4 concurrent projects, develop equipment concepts and production-ready designs in SolidWorks, perform structural and mechanical calculations, specify hydraulic and pneumatic components, and work closely with customers, vendors, and the manufacturing floor throughout the build process.

In addition to owning complex design projects, this engineer will help improve engineering standards and processes, mentor less-experienced engineers, and support the company’s continued expansion into larger and more integrated equipment and automation projects

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of custom industrial machinery and equipment from initial customer requirements through detailed design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and final runoff.
  • Develop machine concepts, detailed assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, specifications, and supporting project documentation using SolidWorks and PDM.
  • Perform mechanical and structural calculations, including load analysis, beam deflection, component sizing, and FEA for heavy machinery, weldments, and structural components.
  • Manage approximately 3-4 concurrent engineering projects while maintaining project schedules, budgets, documentation, and technical deliverables.
  • Design and specify hydraulic and pneumatic systems and select components including cylinders, motors, bearings, actuators, valves, fittings, and related hardware.
  • Partner directly with customers, vendors, production, and other internal functions to resolve technical challenges, support manufacturing, and ensure equipment performs as intended.
  • Help improve engineering standards, design practices, training, and processes while providing technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced engineers.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline with 8+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably designing custom machinery, industrial equipment, or automated systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, with significant hands-on experience developing complex mechanical assemblies and production-ready drawings.
  • Strong experience designing heavy machinery, structural steel, and weldments, including practical knowledge of FEA, statics, loads, machining, welding, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems with the ability to properly size and select mechanical and fluid-power components.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead engineering projects and communicate effectively with customers and cross-functional teams; experience with automation, conveyors, robotics, motion control, estimating, or proposal development is highly valued.
